This tenant improvement project at 4200 Arcadia explores the balance between sophistication and functionality through a carefully curated program that combines public and private golf ranges with an open bar. Designed with a hands-on, detail-driven approach, the project reflects a high-end, luxury aesthetic defined by dark finishes and refined materiality. Given the complexity of the program, strategic decision-making played a critical role in shaping a cohesive, elegant environment that delivers both performance and atmosphere.

Over the past several years, Los Angeles has experienced increasingly severe wildfires. While the number of fire incidents remained relatively stable between 2015 and 2019, the total area burned nearly tripled in 2018 compared to 2016, with more than twenty times the number of structures damaged. Beyond climate change and prolonged drought, a less discussed contributor is long-term fire suppression, which has allowed vegetation and debris to accumulate. When fires can no longer be contained, they burn with far greater intensity. Prescribed burns—controlled, intentional fires—offer a critical strategy by reducing surface fuel and helping prevent catastrophic wildfires.

Fairmount is a complete restoration and remodel of a 9,000-square-foot residence, encompassing full interior design, custom furniture design, and comprehensive planning and project management. The scope also includes the design of a 1,200-square-foot addition and the landscape design of a two-acre site, with city coordination and representation throughout the approval process in La Cañada.

Tectonically, this structure explores material properties and how tension and compression generate varying strengths when manipulated. While a flat sheet of paper bends easily under pressure, warping the material increases its rigidity, creating strength and stability within the structure.

This project explores the formation of an architectural system through the integration of form, material, structure, and environment. The design merges top-down and bottom-up methodologies by incorporating external influences and material performance into a cohesive framework.
The pavilion is constructed using two types of PVC, each selected for its distinct material properties. The design process began with the fabrication of modular units, which are assembled floor by floor. This incremental approach allows curvature to emerge where needed while maintaining structural balance, enabling the pavilion to grow vertically and remain self-supporting.
